Where: Southern California based
What: ukulele meets soulful vocals
Sounds Like: Hailey Reinhart, Lenka
While the mainstream was introduced to the ukulele via the one hit wonder peculiar Tiny Tim many decades ago, the instrument closely related to the mandolin has developed a greater respect in the music industry in recent years. This has been assisted by the impressive success of the Hawaiian based Jake Shimabukuro so much so that there is even a specialty magazine dedicated to the instrument. However, add the smoky R&B vocals of the up and coming Southern Californian based young artist Brit Rodriguez and all of a sudden the instrument is beginning to develop a sense of hip and trendiness.
While Brit Rodriguez’s current musical output includes a healthy balance of self written compositions along with well arranged cover tunes, there is certainly a sense of success lurking around her avenue. With concert appearances on the other side of the world in New Zealand, Rodriguez’s appearances are about as exotic as her vocal styling whether it be her unique compositions or cover arrangements. While young in years there is a certain sense of maturity that is creating a buzz in close musical circles including her recent NAMM appearance. This is an artist that deserves some attention.
